Rome, Italy
After we left Florence, we took the train to Rome for a two night stay!
Accommodations:
- We stayed in an Airbnb right near the Colosseum that we absolutely loved! It was within walking distance to so many sites and it also included breakfast each morning!
TRAVEL TIP: Rome is a HUGE city. We stayed for two nights didnβt have a chance to see the Spanish Steps, Pantheon and many other sites. I think we could have easily spent 4-5 days in Rome exploring the city.
Food/Drinks:
Tonnarello - This was the best restaurant that we ate at in Rome! We got the prosciutto and melon, the carbonara pasta and the diavola pizza and they were all great! Also, I got the best Aperol spritz here out of anywhere on our entire trip! π
Gelateria Valentino - This was our favorite gelato shop in Rome! Valentino was also very kind, helpful and gave us some local tips!
Piccolo Buco - This great little pizza place is just right around the corner from the Trevi Fountain and it is the perfect place to escape from the crowds! We ordered a delicious margherita pizza and were some of the only people in the restaurant!
Things to do/see:
Alter of the Fatherland - This was the first thing we really saw in Rome. Itβs absolutely colossal and itβs free and open to climb the stairs and look around at the museum inside! It was a great way to get our bearings and see Rome from a beautiful vantage point!
Trevi Fountain - Because Iβve never been to Italy at any other time of year besides August, itβs hard for me to gauge how the crowds would be during a less touristy time of year! But HOLY MOLY was the Trevi Fountain crowded! Out of every site that we saw in Italy, this was by far the busiest. Itβs absolutely spectacular, so try to see it if you can but be prepared for swarms of people!
Vatican City - Vatican City was amazing. We booked a small group tour through Airbnb and although it was a little pricey, it was worth every penny! We learned so much and saw the famous Sistine Chapel and St. Peterβs Basilica which were absolutely breathtaking! If you have the time, definitely try to squeeze in a tour of the Vatican!
TRAVEL TIP: When visiting the Vatican you must have your shoulders and knees covered!
Colosseum - This is an absolute MUST when you are in Rome! The Colosseum isnβt only one of the 7 wonders of the world, but it has one of the richest histories of anywhere Iβve been!
Trastevere - This was maybe my favorite part of Rome. This beautiful neighborhood is bursting with amazing restaurants, bars and things to see! Come here at dusk for a delicious dinner and a stroll around the neighborhood - you wonβt be disappointed!
TRAVEL TIP: Also, being that Rome is such a big city, that also means that you will be doing lots of walking! Bring good shoes, comfy clothes, and (if youβre visiting in the summer) a hat and sunscreen!
